Statkraft has made an essential step towards becoming an
important player on the UK residential heating market. As of now, residential
and commercial customers of Statkraft in the UK can be sure that wood pellets
provided by Statkraft meets the latest sustainability criteria and policies
soon to be introduced.
The Biomass Suppliers List was launched on April 2014 to set sustainability criteria for domestic biomass users applying for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Starting from Spring 2015, biomass used to generate heat under RHI will have to meet the target for lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. The benchmark was set at 34.8g of CO2e/MJheat or 60% GHG saving against the EU fossil fuel average. In addition to that, DECC is planning to introduce land criteria with differentiation for different types of biomass.
From April 2015 onwards, all domestic wood pellet users who want to receive the RHI benefits will be obliged to source their fuel from suppliers on the BSL. At the same time, it will be easier for commercial RHI recipients to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability criteria by appointing BSL enlisted suppliers. The application includes estimation of the greenhouse gases emissions from the forestry operations all the way to the delivery in the UK using the UK Biomass & Biogas Carbon Calculator (B2C2). According to the rules set by DECC, producers can be listed individually or under the trader’s name. Statkraft has already gone through this time-consuming procedure together with one of its suppliers, whose product will be included on the list of authorised fuels once the list is published on the BSL website. More information on BSL and the new legislation can be found here:
