Statkraft Tofte AS complies with the highest sustainability obligations and is therefore today publishing an updated Sustainable Biomass Partnership (SBP) Supplier Base Report.

SBP certification requires Statkraft Tofte AS to provide transparency of wood origins, forestry management practices and sustainability information of wood sources in addition to the data for generation stations to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing and delivering biomass. Major European utility customers can continue to purchase fuel from Statkraft confident that they are demonstrating to all stakeholders that they have the most sustainable sourcing in place.

DONG Energy to stop all use of coal by 2023 

DONG Energy has decided that by 2023, coal will no longer be used as fuel at the company's power stations. The decision is a result of the company's vision to lead the way in the transformation to a sustainable energy system and to create a leading green energy company. 

Since 2006, DONG Energy has reduced its coal consumption by 73 per cent, and the company has now decided to entirely phase out the use of coal. By 2023, the use of coal as fuel at DONG Energy's power stations will have stopped completely. The power stations will be replacing coal with sustainable biomass. 

"We've decided to take the final step and phase out the use of coal at all our power stations. The future belongs to renewable energy sources, and therefore we're now converting the last of our coal-fired power stations to sustainable biomass. The decision is in line with our vision to lead the way in the transformation to a sustainable energy system and create a leading green energy company," says Henrik Poulsen, CEO. 

Coal is still one of the most commonly used fuels worldwide. Around 40 per cent of the world's electricity is produced from coal, even though coal is the fuel emitting the most CO2. DONG Energy is the first among the large European energy companies to decide to phase out coal for the production of electricity and heating completely. 

73% less coal since 2006 

Since 2006, DONG Energy has reduced its coal consumption by 73 per cent through a reduction in the number of power stations as well as conversions to sustainable biomass instead of coal. At the same time, the company has constructed more production capacity based on offshore wind than any other company in the world. This means that in just one decade, DONG Energy will have gone from being one of the most coal-intensive utilities in Europe to being among the greenest energy companies in Europe. 

Since 2002, DONG Energy has used wood pellets and wood chips as fuel at both Herning Power Station and Avedøre Power Station, and over the years, the company has increased the share of biomass at the two power stations. In 2016, both Studstrup Power Station near Aarhus and Avedøre Power Station near Copenhagen were converted to run 100 per cent on wood pellets and straw, and during the spring of 2017, Skærbæk Power Station near Fredericia will be able to run 100 per cent on wood chips.

Statkraft AS: Result for the second quarter of 2016

Solid operations - Negative result caused by impairment

(Oslo 21 July 2016) In the second quarter of 2016, Statkraft AS recorded an underlying operating profit (EBITDA) of NOK 2665 million, an increase of NOK 303 million compared with the corresponding period in 2015. The quarter showed a net result of NOK -1899 million which is mainly due to impairments of German assets. 

The average Nordic power price in the second quarter was 24.0 EUR/MWh. This is on the same level as the first quarter, but an increase of 16% compared with the corresponding quarter in 2015. Statkraft`s total production was in line with the same period last year and amounted to 14.3 TWh. Production in the Nordic`s was 13.0 TWh, which was a decrease of 0.3 TWh mainly due to lower hydropower production in Sweden. This was offset by higher production from International Hydropower.

Reduced market expectations have led to impairments related to gas fired power plants and other assets in Germany which in total amounts to NOK 2229 million. The remaining book value of these assets is NOK 1423 million.

- We are pleased with strong underlying operations, but reduced market expectations have led to impairment of German assets, says CEO Christian Rynning-Tønnesen.

The half year`s operating result shows solid performance with an underlying EBITDA of NOK 6915 million. The net result was held back by impairments and ended at NOK 490 million.

Both the Continental and Nordic power markets are undergoing changes with reduced technology cost and new renewable capacity coming online combined with low demand growth. This development has contributed to a decline in power prices.

Low power prices and fundamental changes in the power sector make it important for Statkraft to strengthen the competitiveness. Statkraft has therefore launched a performance improvement programme with the aim to reduce controllable cost by 15% or approximately NOK 800 million by 2018.
